What Makes Antique Picture Frames Better?

by Ned Dagostino on March 14, 2010

Some people look down on mass produced products, but mass production is not necessarily a bad thing. It allows us to buy the products we want at affordable prices. And it makes sure those products are generally available when and where we need them. But some things are just better hand made, and that's why antiques actually seem to be gaining in popularity.

Antique picture frames fall into this category. If you really want to show off your cherished photographs or pieces of art, these frames will do so in a way that a mass produced frame will not be able to. You're not only protecting those pictures, you're making them look better, and calling attention to them.

Sure a standard store bought frame can still make your pictures look great. But put that same photo in an antique frame and you can almost feel the difference. Don't try to explain it because you probably can't. But you will notice it just the same.

Think about this. You have a very old photograph of your great grandmother as a child. Now imagine that same picture in a frame that she owned. It would certainly give that photo extra meaning.

Now not everybody has a frame like this. In that case, imagine that photo in a frame made from the same time period. All of a sudden you have something more than a picture with a border around it. Looking at it, you'll feel as if the photo and frame were made for each other. The eyes of you and your guests will be drawn to it. And you'll love hearing the comments you are sure to receive.

And of course you can be sure that with an antique picture frame you are getting a quality frame. Something that was handmade by someone who took pride in his work. I fully understand that not everything made in the "old days" was better. That would make me a sentimental old fool. But I do believe that most things made by hand are a little better.

It goes back to the fact that everything then was made by hand. And a quality frame maker would give his creation exquisite detailing. Look closely and you will recognize the difference. Again, this is not to say that you can't find that today. You can. But quality is just one of many reasons why you should go with an antique.

At this point you're probably thinking that all sounds great, but you simply can't afford a true antique. And it's true that these frames can be costly. Go to your local antique store or local consignment shop and when you check the price tags, you just may end up gasping for air. And it doesn't matter if the frame is gold, silver or wood; you're probably still going to feel a bit of sticker shock.

But before you break out the credit card and go into debt, realize that there are other options. You absolutely need to shop around, both at home and online. With a little persistence, you'll be able to get the frame you want at a price that's more to your liking. And your budget.

That's the time to buy it. Get it home and put your favorite picture on display. You will immediately feel the difference.

Your guests and family members will notice the difference as well.
