Simple Decorating: Give Your Rec Room A Makeover

How can you unwind in a room that is cluttered, crowded and unattractively arranged? To make matters worse, this room is supposed to be the fun, relaxing part of your house. Yes, I'm talking about the recreation room that can be more than just a place where you put your TV and sound system. It is supposed to be a pleasurable room to hang out with friends and family.

Transforming your recreation room from duh! to wow! is no hard work. Starting with the floor plan by clearing out as much space as you can, rearranging the furniture and doing away with things that you or the room doesn't need can do wonders for opening up the space. The room will look more airy, bigger and more relaxing.

Many homeowners end up keeping things that they have no urgent use of in the rec room. Some others stock the items that they don't know where to place yet in this room because they don't interfere with the use of space. After all, you sit, laze around and watch TV in this room. What harm can an extra shelf, cabinet and discarded artworks leaning haphazardly on the wall do? Well, they just ruin the entire room, that's all. And these mistaken people got themselves a junk room to boot.

What are you going to do with so much extra space? This area gives the kids more room to play. Divide the toys into play centers. This is a common technique used in day cares and schools today. Simply take all of the toys in one category and place them in one area. For example, if your children love to pretend to be chefs, make a kitchen play center. Lay down a small area rug and set up all the "kitchen toys" on this rug. This becomes their kitchen. Now you can set the rule that kitchen toys stay in the kitchen. Use this method throughout the rooms to define play areas for your children.

Not only can the toys be divided up into centers, but studies have shown that a designated reading area will encourage children to read. For this you will need a soft, plush rug and some cozy pillows. Place a bookshelf against the wall, and then scatter pillows and at least one bean bag chair per child. This creates a soft comfortable reading area that kids will be drawn to. Again the rule you need to establish is that books stay in the reading area.

The "rule of the rug" helps keep things organized. Through this rule you keep your rec room from becoming a wreck again. Everyone has space to be comfortable and there will be no more kids in front of the TV. Without the use of area rugs, this does not work as well. The presence of the rugs gives separation to the various play areas within the room. Make sure you also include a soft rug in front of the TV, so your children can sit and watch a movie comfortably. As you use rugs to create zones in your room, you will soon enjoy an organized place where your family can spend time together.

Keep up with current trends in rug decorating and enhance your home with pink shaggy area rugs.
